Challenges in Geolocating Cryptocurrency Transactions for Law Enforcement Investigators It is a common misunderstanding that cryptocurrencies (such as Bitcoin) offer complete anonymity for their users. They don’t. They are merely pseudonymous – which means they are anonymous only until someone reveals who is behind them. Therein lies the problem. Typically investigators have to wait until the owner of a cryptocurrency address involved with a transaction of interest interacts with an entity, such as an exchange, before they can uncover meaningful identifying information. There is another way to de-anonymize transactions. Cryptocurrency users (and misusers) have to interact with the bitcoin network, miners, and other clients to record their transactions. In doing so, they are constantly leaving network traces / footprints. This webinar will look at network-based investigation techniques that can be used to dissect and analyze the network communications between cryptocurrency clients, peers, miners and other components; and show how that communications can be used to discover who is behind transactions in real time.
