Cloud 101 - Understanding and Investigating Cloud Computing Services for Law Enforcement

The “Cloud” has completely revolutionized information technology and computing. Today it is a half-trillion dollar industry that underlies operations from the NSA to Tesla to your favorite (or least favorite) messaging app. Ask yourself, what service isn’t impacted by cloud one way or another? What service isn’t hosted in a cloud environment? What service/app won’t be going forward? What device won’t be controlled by the cloud? The answer is none.

Yet most law enforcement agencies don’t have a good understanding of cloud computing infrastructure and how to investigate the services built on it. That is because cloud computing architectures are sophisticated, highly virtualized, enormous in scale, and proprietary. Further, they offer a huge spectrum of offerings. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Oracle and others literally provide hundreds of cloud-based services. 5G operators will soon be doing the same, as will cars manufacturers and others that you never thought of or expected.

This webinar will provide law enforcement agencies with a basic understanding of cloud services (e.g., servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence); how they work; who the players are; what they offer; and to whom. In addition to a basic overview of cloud technologies, the presenter will look at what data is kept, where, who can access it, for how long, and provide some perspective regarding what to ask for in an investigation.
