Locating and tracking devices by MAC address and app-based SDKs: limitations and emerging OS-based privacy measures (e.g., Apple/Google)

MAC addresses have long been an effective means to tracking user devices without requiring the help from ISPs or wireless operators. However, Apple and Google are proactively taking steps to obfuscate/tumble MAC addresses, which in turn undermines many of the location approaches used today. Further, operating systems (IOS, Android, MacOS, Windows) are proactively limiting application access to GPS-based location and MAC information, as well as cutting off third party apps from embedding SDKs (such as XMODE) from collecting/selling location information.

This webinar will look at the subject of MAC address, network location and GPS-based approaches to collecting location information. Topics addressed include:

  • Basics of MAC and network interface addresses, and how they can be used to track location
  • How to correlate MAC addresses and user identity/location
  • Limitations of MAC address location
  • Differences between MAC-based address correlation, and network-based location (specifically mobile networks)
  • How smartphones apps/SDKs can be used to gather location information
  • IoT-based MAC address harvesting
  • Example app/SDK-based techniques for location correlation: TikTok, XMODE
  • OS vendor approaches to limiting MAC and GPS-based location techniques
  • And More
